Certified Gas Is Changing the Rules of US Exports

Rising demand for low-emission certified gas is reshaping US production, unlocking premiums and securing global market access.

The US natural gas industry is shifting towards certified supply as buyers demand verifiable proof of low methane emissions, pushing producers and exporters to change how they operate. Independent certification, rather than broad sustainability pledges, is becoming central to securing contracts and market access.

In June, SouthStar Energy Services began testing MiQ’s MethaneScout system, which tracks methane emissions from wellhead to end customer. At the same time, MiQ has been refining its certification framework to improve access to verified emissions data. These tools are helping turn certified gas from a niche product into a requirement in competitive negotiations.

Market and policy pressures are accelerating the trend. The EU is preparing methane regulations that will require importers to prove compliance, prompting US exporters to prepare in advance. Domestically, buyers are showing a willingness to pay premiums for certified gas, leaving uncertified supply at risk of being discounted.

Producers and infrastructure operators are adapting quickly. Certification programmes are being expanded, while midstream operators are adjusting systems to keep certified gas separate, safeguarding its added value. “Certification is now part of the first conversation with buyers. It is not just about price anymore,” said one producer executive.

The commercial incentives are significant. Certified gas opens access to premium markets, strengthens customer trust and provides an edge in crowded global trade. But obstacles remain. Smaller operators may find certification costs prohibitive, and as verification becomes widespread, the price advantage could narrow.

Even so, certification is emerging as a long-term market standard. If current momentum continues, most US natural gas sold at home and abroad could soon require verification of methane performance. Early adopters that build credibility now are positioning themselves to benefit as environmental accountability becomes an essential condition of international energy trade.
