Gulfport’s Aerial Edge in the Methane Market

Gulfport Energy expands aerial methane scans to protect its MiQ rating, cut leaks faster, and secure a global market edge.

Gulfport Energy is stepping up its methane strategy, a move that shows how U.S. gas producers are adapting to climate-conscious markets abroad. On July 29, 2025, the company announced it had expanded the use of Bridger Photonics’ aerial methane detection to cover every Appalachian site on a quarterly basis throughout 2024.

Instead of monitoring select facilities, Gulfport now relies on comprehensive aerial scans. Bridger’s Gas Mapping LiDAR system can detect leaks from above, pinpoint the source, and measure the volume. The technology won U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approval in January, giving operators a powerful tool that regulators now recognize.

For Gulfport, the expansion is more than an efficiency upgrade. It helps protect its “A” grade from MiQ, an independent certifier of low-emission natural gas. That rating acts as a passport to higher-value markets in Europe and Asia, where buyers increasingly demand proof of climate performance.

“This is about setting the pace,” a Gulfport spokesperson said. “Global customers are asking for cleaner energy, and we’re answering with speed, scale, and full transparency.”

Analysts say certified gas is turning into a commercial edge, offering access to better pricing and priority in tenders. Methane control has shifted from a voluntary green goal to a competitive requirement.

The shift mirrors a wider industry pattern. Full-field aerial monitoring allows producers to find leaks early, cut product loss, and get ahead of stricter regulations. But scaling the program carries challenges, including managing vast new data streams and training crews to respond quickly.

The payoff, however, is substantial: safer operations, stronger compliance, and an advantage in the global marketplace.

In Appalachia and beyond, Gulfport’s move signals where the sector is headed. As accountability tightens and international buyers raise the bar, advanced methane detection is no longer optional. The companies that lead now will shape the energy landscape of the next decade.
